Kevin Johnson
Media Relations Manager
Kevin brings over 25 years experience
as a media professional to Tech Image, both as a broadcast
and print journalist and in media relations and PR.
As a media relations practitioner, Johnson’s
ability to be flexible, versatile and a quick learner
has served him well throughout his career as he has
represented a myriad of diverse business interests.
Johnson started his career in television news in Champaign
and Springfield, IL. He has handled media relations
and PR for a sports marketing firm promoting professional
golf. He spent five years as a public information officer
with the Illinois Department of Revenue, the State
of Illinois’ tax agency. He also gained valuable
crisis communications skills in a two-year stint as
the media relations manager for Amtrak’s Intercity
business unit, based in Chicago. And for eight years,
he was on the ground floor of a healthcare entrepreneurial
effort that resulted in Home Access Health of Hoffman
Estates, IL,
What is Your Favorite Success
Story?
Personally, seeing both of my sons enrolled in the Business School at the University
of Illinois. Professionally, at Home Access Health, I led a team that won a
Silver Trumpet award from the Publicity Club of Chicago for the launch of an
FDA-approved at-home counseling and testing service for HIV. Our PR and media
relations efforts reached over 95 million people with news of what still is
an important testing option for people who wished to remain anonymous. But
I actually feel greater pride in playing a key role in helping to build that
company from the ground up. I was part of a great team that created an exceptional
service that helped a lot of people. We never sold as many test kits as we
had hoped but the personal growth that came out of the experience can not ever
be measured.
What Are Your Hobbies and
Interests?
I like going to games; pro, college, high school and even grade school if I
know somebody’s kid. I get a big kick out of attending a major sporting
event and then reading the papers the next day to see if the sportswriters
take on the game was the same as mine. If I’m not there live, them I’m
usually glued to the tube when my favorite teams are on. During the summer,
I play a lot of golf and, for some reason; I’m still playing competitive
softball (and winning) against teams that are much, much younger. We keep saying
every year will be our last.
What are the titles of some
good books you’ve read recently?
“ The Devil in the White City” by Erik Larson, a fascinating parallel
story of the City of Chicago during the World’s Columbian Exposition in
1893 and a devious serial killer that operated in the midst of it all. I also
have to give props to “We the Media” by Dan Gillmor, “Whose
Your Caddy” by Rick Reilly and "Moneyball" by Michael Lewis.
Who Are Your Favorite Recording
Artists?
Yes. (Get it?) No, really, The Who is my favorite rock and roll (or is it maximum
R&B?) band. But I would also put Pink Floyd as 1B. I’m a product
of the classic rock era. I also love 93 XRT.
What are your favorite TV
Shows?
Whatever they put on at 8:00 p.m. on HBO (especially The Sopranos). I was a
big fan of NYPD Blue and I still regularly enjoy Scrubs, The West Wing, Saturday
Night Live and the occasional CSI wherever (they use Who songs for the intro,
you know). But my television idol will always be Johnny Carson, god rest his
soul.
Why Are You a Good
Fit at Tech Image?
Because I think I share the “lets roll up our sleeves and get after it” attitude
of my colleagues. It’s a wonderful team effort. And any one of us will
run through a brick wall to get the job done. |
